Temporary Protective Status

Temporary Protective Status (“TPS”) is currently available to citizens from five countries. In addition to being present in the United States and a citizen from one of these countries, an individual also has to prove that they have been in the United States for a certain amount of time and otherwise qualifies for TPS. The amount of time, including continuous residence, will depend on which country they are from that is currently covered by TPS. If you qualify for TPS, then you can also apply for work authorization while in the United States under TPS. You also generally can not be removed (deported) from the United States while in TPS status.

The current countries that are designated for TPS are:

El Salvador
Honduras
Nicaragua
Somalia
Sudan

Certain Liberian citizens are covered by Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), which is different from TPS but can be confused with TPS.

It should also be noted that TPS is not meant to last forever, so those in the Untied States covered by TPS should be aware that one day TPS may no longer be available to citizens of their countries.

If you have any questions relating to TPS, please contact our office at 313-963-2505 .
