When it comes to obtaining lawful permanent resident status (commonly known as a Green Card), the process has many steps that can be difficult if applicants are not properly prepared. One common way to establish this status is through a family relationship; U.S. citizens can file an application for lawful permanent resident status on behalf of their spouses, parents, children or siblings while lawful permanent residents can file an application for lawful permanent resident status on behalf of their spouses and unmarried children.

If a foreign national family member resides abroad, then it is necessary for him or her to apply for an immigrant visa at a United States Embassy or Consulate abroad. The process begins when the necessary paperwork is filed with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) inside the United States. Once they approve the initial paperwork, the application is forwarded to the United States Department of State for additional review and processing.

When all documents are forwarded to the appropriate embassy or consulate, an in-person interview is conducted between a consular officer and the family member for final verification. Upon completion of this process, the individual still does not obtain lawful permanent resident status until they physically enter the United States using their approved immigrant visa.

In order to undertake this process compliantly, it is helpful to completely understand each step of the way. An experienced lawyer can provide you with this understanding.
